Calvary Community Groups operate Fall through Spring with a break over summer
Our mission is to cultivate spiritual growth and discipleship through gospel-centered community groups. We focus on teaching and living out Jesus' commands, deepening our relationship with God and each other through Scripture, prayer, and fellowship. We also prioritize family discipleship, equipping all generations to grow in faith and build a lasting legacy in Christ.
We envision a Christ-centered community where believers of all ages grow together in faith, love, and unity.
What are community groups?
At Calvary Juneau, we believe that God’s people have always been called to gather in various ways, both in large numbers and in intimate, close-knit groups (Acts 2:46-47). While many of us come together on Saturday nights to worship Jesus as part of the broader church community, we also recognize the importance of smaller gatherings that foster deeper relationships and spiritual growth.
As beings created in God’s image, we are designed for community (Genesis 2:18). We cannot thrive in isolation, for God has woven into our very nature the need to connect, share, and grow alongside others. The church is where our shared love for Jesus and our proximity to one another come together, forming a unique and vibrant community that reflects the love of Christ.
However, the local church is more than just a social gathering or a community club. It is a sacred assembly where we come together to celebrate the transformative power of the gospel—Jesus’s life, death, and resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:1-4). Similarly, our community groups are not just casual social gatherings. While relationships and friendships naturally develop within these groups, the core purpose is far deeper.
Our community groups exist to nurture discipleship and spiritual growth through our shared commitment to the gospel. As Jesus commanded, we are called to love one another as He has loved us (John 13:34-35). In these groups, we seek to build each other up in faith, encouraging one another to live out the teachings of Christ in our daily lives (Hebrews 10:24-25). We gather not only to grow in our relationships with each other but to deepen our relationship with Jesus, allowing His love to guide and transform us.
In obedience to the Great Commission, we are committed to "teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you" (Matthew 28:20). Our mission is to create a space where every member of Calvary Juneau can experience the fullness of Christian community—a place where we disciple one another, bear each other’s burdens, and live out the love of Christ together (Galatians 6:2). Through these community groups, we strive to be a living expression of the body of Christ, united in purpose, love, and mission.
To that end, we embrace the common means of grace—Scripture, prayer, fellowship, and the sacraments—as vital practices within our community groups (Acts 2:42). By devoting ourselves to the apostles' teaching through the study of God’s Word, seeking the Lord together in prayer, sharing in the Lord’s Supper, and fostering genuine fellowship, we aim to grow in grace and deepen our communion with God and one another. Through these means, we experience the transforming power of the Holy Spirit, equipping us to live out our faith in a way that honors Christ and builds up His church.
Furthermore, we place a special emphasis on family discipleship, recognizing that the home is a critical environment for spiritual formation at every age (Deuteronomy 6:6-7). Our community groups are designed to support and equip families in discipling one another—parents, children, and all generations. We believe that every member of the family, from the youngest to the oldest, has a vital role in growing together in faith. By incorporating family discipleship into our gatherings, we seek to strengthen the bonds of faith within families and ensure that the next generation is rooted and grounded in the love of Christ.
Through intentional teaching, shared experiences, and mutual encouragement, our community groups strive to be a place where families can flourish spiritually, nurturing a legacy of faith that will endure for generations to come (Psalm 78:4-7).
